Technique and Method
Each piece of landscape has been deeply meditated upon - every grass, pattern of leaf, etc. and also highlighted the focus of the piece (the waterfalls) by shining his torch on these particular areas.
"Every little bit of that picture is a decision by me to shine a torch on that part of the landscape." - Peter Solness. He has deconstructed the process so that he can see what it consists of, giving him a better sense of detail.
Features
Solness has not layered anything over this photo like most other artists I have encountered, but rather enhanced it with light and chosen to highlight features of his choice,
"I'm deciding which part of the landscape I want to reveal rather than the sun telling me." - Peter Solness
The salient feature in this photo would be the waterfall because it is highlighted with strong contrast to the background. This can symbolise many things, which I'll further discuss in 'Concept'.
Concept
In this piece Peter Solness is invoking the image of a priest attending a shrine,
"I'm with the torch sort of devotionally revealing stuff. I went through a lot of darkness before this series, so it was very symbolic to walk out of this dark period of my life."
The highlighted waterfalls are what he is revealing, and symbolise how he is breaking out of the darkness in his life. Slowly, he is opening up and allowing us to get to know him.
Another concept is his connection to the bush:
"When I'm out there, I feel such a connection to the bush. These subjects seem so mysterious and beautiful to me. I want to celebrate this beauty, to convey this beauty to people. It's like a devotion to say "this is a beautiful rock... landscape... country... We are lucky to be Australians. Let's be grateful for this".
He is sharing this beauty - the beauty of Australia with us and as a result trying to get us to realise how lucky we are to be able to have this.
